Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is a process that helps reduce the risk of fracturing, cracking, and stress in the weld and parent metals of a piece of equipment. Although many materials benefit from PWHT, it is critical to understand the material with which welding is occurring. Not all materials require PWHT, and some can even be damaged by the process. A general rule of thumb, although one should always consult a PWHT expert, the higher the carbon content in an equipment piece likely means a greater need for PWHT. We adhere to ASME standards in determining when PWHT is necessary and what the recommended process is.
